Passing Judgment: Justice as a Personal Virtue
Tara Smith Professor of Philosophy University of Texas at Austin
Wednesday May 12, 19.00 – 21.00
Abstract
While people routinely debate the demands of justice in the legal and political arenas, in the trenches of everyday life, justice is largely neglected. This lecture aims to remedy that neglect.
By exploring the vital significance of personal justice to an individual’s well-being, Professor Smith challenges the commonplace assumption that injustice results from selfishness, arguing that the exercise of justice is, in fact, an egoistic necessity.
The lecture will first clarify the essential nature of justice and then explain the practical case for a person’s being just in his routine interactions with others. It will proceed to explore certain unconventional implications of this view, stressing the emphatic need to judge other people, the conflict between justice and egalitarianism, and considering when, if ever, forgiveness and mercy might be appropriate.
Professor Smith is the author of "Ayn Rand’s Normative Ethics – The Virtuous Egoist", Cambridge University Press, 2006.

FOREDRAG Onsdag 19 Maj 2010
Tid & sted: 19.00- 20.00, Gothersgade 140 Auditorium 1.
Kristian Sandberg, cand.psych.
